Era of private lunar exploration

Monday, March 3, 2025 | 11:18:19

-Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost spacecraft landed on Sunday near the Moon’s eastern edge, facing Earth. Blue Ghost is one of three privately operated lunar landers that have recently embarked on rocket-powered missions to explore Earth’s closest celestial neighbor. This marks a significant shift from the 20th century, when lunar exploration was dominated by government space agencies.

Blue Ghost is carrying 10 NASA science and technology instruments and is expected to operate for about two weeks, collecting data on lunar dust, rocks, and minerals. Earlier this week, a series of images and videos captured by the lander in orbit provided a rare close-up view of the far side of the Moon. One image, taken from 119 km above the surface, is among the clearest ever recorded of an area that cannot be seen from Earth.

Joining Blue Ghost are two other private lunar landers, Athena and Resilience , both tasked with sample collection missions. Athena, a 4.7-meter-tall lander, was successfully launched last week and is expected to land on Thursday on a plateau near the Moon’s south pole. Its primary mission is to search for water ice in permanently shadowed regions.

The lander also carries Micro Nova Hopper, a small autonomous drone designed to detach from Athena and explore deep, unlit lunar craters for signs of water ice. Resilience is en route to the Moon and is expected to arrive in May or early June.

If the landing is successful, Resilience will deploy a 5-kilogram robotic rover to collect and analyze lunar dust samples. It will also carry a water electrolyzer and a cosmic radiation detector, among other scientific instruments.

The lunar landers are the result of decades of effort to transition Moon exploration from government-led missions to a more competitive private sector. In the near future, private companies will play an increasingly direct role in developing lunar infrastructure, resource-harvesting systems, and even a lunar economy.

This shift suggests that the Moon could soon become an integral part of the global space supply chain, supporting deeper space missions and human exploration beyond Earth’s orbit.
